In May 1966, in a small living room in Washington state, a faithful group of friends trusted in the Spirit to lead them in the Lord’s work as they set forth in establishing India Evangelical Mission. This group included Mr. G.V. Mathai and Mrs. Mariamma Mathai from Kerala, India, along with a dear group of friends they met while G.V. was studying at Central Washington Bible College.

GV and Mariamma shared their hearts for the millions in their homeland who had yet to hear the Gospel. Their passion was contagious and their new friends quickly became family as they set out to establish an organization that would focus on empowering Indian nationals to share the hope of this transformational Good News.

In step with the desire of many Indian people to read about events and ideas, IEM opened Christian Reading Rooms in Kerala to cultivate education and to provide a welcoming place where people could be introduced to Jesus.

Biblical training and education remained the central focus as the ministry continued to grow. In 1972, the Bible Correspondence course was launched in modern-day Mumbai with the help of Dr. George Verwer, the president of Operation Mobilization. This program would serve as a strong foundation to later establish IEM’s Bible College.

Over the next several years, IEM continued to grow at a rapid pace and a holistic approach to ministry began to take shape. The ministry laid the foundation for a medical clinic and hosted their first Christian Workers’ Conference, which trained local Indian nationals to share their faith. In 1978, IEM was gifted land to build a Children’s Home where they could care for and minister to children with the love of God.

Today, over 50 years later, IEM continues to mobilize

Indian nationals in transforming India with the hope of the Gospel by:

Educating eager men and women in the IEM Bible College

Equipping Christians in the workforce to serve as leaders in their communities through IEM Leadership Training Institute

Embracing children with safe care and love in the IEM Children’s Home

Empowering Christians to compassionately respond to the needs of the community.

The Lord has empowered and blessed the work of the mission and daily provides opportunities for the Gospel to come alive in the hearts of those searching for truth. The transformation continues.

Statement of Faith

We believe the Bible to be the inspired, infallible

and authoritative Word of God.

We believe that there is one God, eternally existent in three Persons:

Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

We believe in the Deity of our Lord Jesus Christ, in His Virgin birth, in

His sinless life, in His miracles, in His vicarious and atoning death through His

shed blood, in His bodily resurrection, in His ascension to the right

hand of the Father, and in His personal return in power and glory.

We believe that regeneration by the Holy Spirit is absolutely essential for

the salvation of sinful man and that salvation is available by grace

to everyone through personal faith in Christ.

We believe in the present ministry of the Holy Spirit by whose

indwelling the Christian is enabled to live a godly life.

We believe in the resurrection of both the saved and the lost,

they that are saved unto the resurrection of life, and they that are lost

unto the resurrection of damnation.

We believe in the spiritual unity of believers in our Lord Jesus Christ,

who comprise the church which is His body.
