Mission

India Evangelical Mission exists to equip and send Indian nationals to share the Gospel, serve their communities, and transform lives through Christ’s love.

Our Story

In May 1966, in a small living room in Washington State, a faithful group of friends trusted the Spirit to lead them in the Lord’s work as they set out to establish India Evangelical Mission. This group included G.V. Mathai and Mariamma Mathai from Kerala, India, along with close friends they met while studying at Central Washington Bible College.

G.V. and Mariamma shared a burden for the millions in their homeland who had yet to hear the Gospel. Their passion was contagious, and their circle of friends soon became family as they began shaping a ministry devoted to empowering Indian nationals to share the hope of Christ throughout India.

As the vision grew, IEM opened Christian Reading Rooms in Kerala to promote education and provide welcoming spaces where people could learn about faith and community.

Biblical training remained at the center of the mission. In 1972, IEM launched a Bible Correspondence Course in Mumbai with the help of Dr. George Verwer, president of Operation Mobilization. This course laid the foundation for what would later become IEM’s Bible College.

Over the years, IEM continued to grow through God’s provision and the dedication of His people. The ministry expanded to include a medical clinic, a Children’s Home, and the first Christian Workers’ Conference, which trained local believers to share their faith and care for children with the love of God.

Our Mission Today

More than fifty years later, India Evangelical Mission continues to equip and mobilize Indian nationals to transform their nation with the hope of the Gospel.
  • Educating eager men and women through the IEM Bible College.
  • Equipping Christians to serve as leaders in their local communities through the Leadership Training Institute.
  • Embracing children with safety, care, and love in the IEM Children’s Home.
  • Empowering believers to respond with compassion to the needs of their neighbors.
The Lord continues to bless the work of IEM, opening doors for the Gospel and transforming lives across India.

Statement of Faith

We believe the Bible is the inspired, infallible, and authoritative Word of God.

We believe in one God, eternally existent in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

We believe in the deity of our Lord Jesus Christ, in His virgin birth, sinless life, miracles, and atoning death through His shed blood, in His bodily resurrection, in His ascension to the right hand of the Father, and in His personal return in power and glory.

We believe regeneration by the Holy Spirit is essential for the salvation of sinful man and that salvation is available by grace through faith in Christ.

We believe in the present ministry of the Holy Spirit, by whose indwelling the Christian is enabled to live a godly life.

We believe in the resurrection of both the saved and the lost, the saved to everlasting life and the lost to everlasting separation from God.

We believe in the spiritual unity of believers in our Lord Jesus Christ, who comprise His body, the Church.
